Benefits of Mettā Meditation 1. Sukhaṃ supati - sleeping in comfort 2. Sukhaṃ paṭibujjhati - awakening in comfort 3. Na pāpakaṃ supinaṃ passati - seeing no evil dreams 4. Manussānaṃ piyo hoti - Dearing by the human beings 5. Amanussānaṃ piyo hoti - Dearing by the non-human beings 6. Devatā rakkhanti - Devas (gods) protect him 7. Nāssa aggi vā visaṃ vā satthaṃ vā kamati - Fire, poison, and sword cannot touch him 8. Tuvaṭaṃ cittaṃ samādhiyati - One's mind can concentrate quickly 9. Mukhavaṇṇo vippasīdati - countenance is serene 10. Asammūḷho kālaṅkaroti - dies without being confused in mind 11. Uttari appaṭivijjhanto brahmalokūpago hoti - If he fails to attain arahantship (the highest sanctity) here and now, he will be reborn in the brahma-world (AN 11.16) Preliminary practice for metta Meditation - have been finished the food - approaching the silent place and sitting in comfortable posture - reflecting the danger of anger and benefits of patient (Why? Because hate has to be abandoned and patience attained in the development of this meditation subject, and he cannot abandon unseen dangers and attain unknown advantages) he should embark upon the development of loving-kindness for the purpose of secluding the mind from hate seen as a danger and introducing it to patience known as an advantage. For loving-kindness should not be developed at first towards the following four kinds of persons: 1. an antipathetic person, (To put an antipathetic person in a dear one’s place is fatiguing) 2. a very dearly loved friend, (To put a very dearly loved friend in a neutral person’s place is fatiguing; and if the slightest mischance befalls the friend, he feels like weeping) 3. a neutral person, and (To put a neutral person in a respected one’s or a dear one’s place is fatiguing.) 4. a hostile person. (Anger springs up in him if he recollects a hostile person.) 5. Also it should not be developed specifically towards the opposite sex, or towards a dead person. Cultivating of Metta meditation - cultivating oneself (aham sukhito homi, niddukkho, va avera abyapajjho anigho sukhiattanam pariharami). Next after that, in order to proceed easily, he can recollect such gifts, kind words, etc., 1. as inspire love and endearment, such virtue, learning, etc., 2. as inspire respect and reverence met with in a teacher or his equivalent or 3. a preceptor or his equivalent, developing loving-kindness towards him in the way beginning, 4. a very dearly loved friend, then 5. towards a neutral person as a very dearly loved friend, then 6. towards a hostile person as neutral.
